How to Care for Your Post-Surgery Bra (and Make It Last!)

After surgery, your bra becomes more than just a piece of clothing—it’s part of your healing journey. Designed to offer comfort, support, and softness, your post-surgery bra deserves a little TLC to help it stay in top condition as you recover.

At Breastwear, we use high-quality, breathable, cotton-rich fabrics made to support sensitive skin and healing bodies. With the right care, your bra can continue to feel just as good as the first wear. Here’s how:

🧼 1. Wash Gently—Because Your Bra Is Working Hard

We recommend hand washing your post-surgery bra in cool or lukewarm water with a mild detergent. If machine washing is more convenient, always use a delicate cycle and place the bra in the Breastwear garment lingerie bag that it comes in for extra protection.

Avoid harsh chemicals, fabric softeners, or bleach—these can irritate sensitive skin and break down elastic over time.

🌬 2. Air Dry Only—No Heat, No Problem

High heat can damage delicate fabrics and elastic. Instead, gently press out excess water (never wring or twist), and lay your bra flat to dry in the shade.

Avoid the dryer—it may seem convenient, but the heat can reduce the bra’s lifespan and affect its shape and support.

🗓 3. Rotate Between Bras

If you’re wearing a bra 24/7 in the early recovery weeks, having at least two or three bras on rotation is ideal. This gives each bra time to breathe and bounce back between washes, helping maintain their shape and stretch.

🧺 4. Store With Care

Store your post-surgery bras flat or with the cups nested gently to avoid bending or creasing the fabric. If your bra has front closures, fasten them before storing to prevent snagging.

5. Know When It’s Time to Replace

Even with great care, bras won’t last forever—especially ones worn daily. Signs it might be time for a new one:

  • Loss of support or stretch

  • Fading, thinning fabric

  • Fraying seams or pilling

  • Changes in your recovery or comfort needs
